I would say the 2001 Daytona 500. It brought in a new standard in TV broadcasting with Fox and TNT. It also marked the beginning of the safety era with the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt.

2007 Daytona 500 waS ALMOST my favorite…but id have to say when Dale Earnhardt sr. Finally scored his Daytona 500 victory.

1998 Daytona 500 when Dale Sr finally won it.
When Richard Petty got his 200th win.

It has to be the ‘79 Daytona 500. It was the most watched race in history and many people believe has a lot to do with NASCAR’s rise to national prominence. It’s probably the most discussed race of all time largely due to the fight at the end.

Yup, Colonel Reb is right. IMO.

most historic was the ‘79 Daytona 500. it was the 1st Nascar race broadcast on TV and that one race is what got most fans into it, mostly because of the fight at the end of the race between Donnie Allison, Donnie’s brother Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough

most memorable for me personally was the ‘98 Daytona 500 because that was when Dale Earnhardt Sr. finally won the Daytona 500

It’s a tie, and it’s all about the Late Great Dale Sr. The two most historic races of all time are the 1998 Daytona 500. When Senior won, every man, on every crew, ran out to where the winner normally does his victory doughnuts. They lined up, regardless of team, number, title or creed to congratulate him. No other driver before or since, has had that level of respect paid to him publicly. The second, was the 2001 Daytona 500, when the track finally claimed his life. Walk into any track today, and ask any kid why he’s there, and he’ll tell you about the day he saw his dad cry because of the death of one man. Millions, and that is no exaggeration, have been drawn to NASCAR, wondering how the death of one man, could cause such a commotion and upheaval, that the entire sport was basically reshaped. The tracks converted to have the safety barriers. The almost automatic requirement of the HANS device. And the COT (car of tomorrow) which the drivers are now using. The new design is meant to have better crumple zones to reduce impact to the driver and the wings and panels are designed to better keep the cars on the ground, not in the air. Bottom line, both revolve around someone who, almost everyone would describe as legendary. But if you ever got the chance to have Dale Earnhardt Sr describe himself, it would be in much more modest terms. That is until you put him on a track, in a fire suit, and behind the wheel of a car that will blow itself to bits trying to give him it’s all. Then you aren’t looking at just a man. You are in the presence of the Intimidator.
