Collecting sports collectibles or sports memorabilia, antique or modern, is limited by two factors: the money available and the space to be filled. Having determined these basic essentials, it is then a personal matter. The taste of the collector may lead to Baseball Memorabilia, Basketball Memorabilia, Football Memorabilia, Golf Memorabilia, NASCAR memorabilia, Diecast Collectibles, Bobble Heads, Hero Posters, or innumerable other things. The lucky acquisition of an admired piece may lead to a determination to get more of the same, or at least to find out what the admiration is all about.

An encyclopedia definition of Sports Collecting would go something like this: “The hobby of sports collecting consists of acquiring specific sports items based on a particular sporting interest of the sports collector. These sports collections of sporting things are often highly organized, carefully cataloged, and attractively displayed.” A sports collectible (or collectable) is defined as a manufactured item designed for people interested in sports to collect. The term sports memorabilia usually refers to items related to sporting that can be directly connected to a recent or historical sporting event or sports personality. There are many people that collect these sports memorabilia and collectibles.

Since collecting depends on the interests of the individual collector, it may deal with almost any subject including sports collectible & sports memorabilia. The depth and breadth of the collection may also vary. Some collectors choose to focus on a specific subtopic within their area of general interest, for example Baseball memorabilia of the New York Yankees, Basketball memorabilia of the Los Angeles Lakers, Football memorabilia of the Dallas Cowboys, Golf memorabilia of Tiger Woods, NASCAR memorabilia of Tony Stewart, Diecast collectibles of fire trucks, Bobble Heads for any sport, & posters of heroes such as Lance Armstrong. Others prefer to keep a more general collection, accumulating any or all Baseball memorabilia, Basketball memorabilia, Football memorabilia, Golf memorabilia, NASCAR memorabilia, Diecast collectibles, Bobble Heads, or Hero Posters.

When the NBA, MLB, and NFL began selling their basketball, baseball, and football jerseys in stores during the 1980s, game used jerseys also became a hot item among sports memorabilia collectors. Former NBA player Dennis Rodman was famous for taking off his jerseys and throwing them to the stands after his games were over. Michael Jordan is probably the basketball player whose memorabilia is most sought after by collectors. Today’s stars include Ben Roethlisberger, Shaquille O’Neil, Nomar Garciaparra, etc. These players seem to be pushing the already popular area of sports collectibles and memorabilia to a new level of acceptance to the public.

Collections can take the form of a single item such as a signed baseball, football, or basketball. Collections can also take the form of a series of items, such as jerseys from each member of a particular baseball, basketball, or football team. A NASCAR collection of hats from different drivers is very popular. Golf balls with different logos are especially popular. The cost of any sports collectible memorabilia item is directly proportional to the popularity of the sports figure with which the item correlates. The more popular the sports figure, the more money the sports collectible memorabilia item will demand. The whole sports collectible memorabilia industry is driven by supply and demand. The more demand the higher the price and vice versa. Also, the more supply of an item, the lower the price. Sports cards would be a good example. Only so many of certain cards were ever made. Those carry a higher price than those that were made in bulk. Quality is a very big determining factor in the price of any sports collectible memorabilia item. In general, the better the quality, the higher the price.

Collecting sports memorabilia may help fill your time with an enjoyable hobby and provide you with a diversion from daily hassles.

Collecting memorabilia can be anything from football jersey or collection of snaps for scrapbook to collecting every item you might find about a particular player, team, or sport you are fascinated about. Putting together display cases with jerseys, game balls and helmets along with pictures from particular events can be fun. You could buy some accessories that could help you in displaying your sports collectibles too.

Yet another easy to start collectible hobby is collecting of pins. Most sports present collectible pins of their respective teams and it is a very popular segment of the sports collectible market these days. Some of the well-known pins are the ones, which memorialize particular events such as Olympics. Antique equipment for sports collectibles for instance vintage baseball gloves and bats are also fast sellers.

Collection of sports cards for instance baseball cards is even now hot as ever though and through the years these cards which had started as a hobby for many during childhood are now raking in huge sums of money for the collectors. Rare cards like those of Babe Ruth or Willie Mays bring in extraordinary amounts.

Another area that is super hot right now is, NASCAR. One finds here replica racecars, helmets, leather jackets, etc. My dad is a big time fan of Jeff Gordon and possesses about everything that has his name or picture inscribed. When we talk about sports memorabilia and collectibles, what immediately comes into your mind?  Do you visualize the sports cards, or do you think of the varied gear and equipment like signed jerseys, jackets, hats, and posters?  Fans know that there are several ways of showing their loyalty and patronage by accumulating items of their favorite team or sports star.
Fans collect for other sports as well, such as NASCAR, golf, baseball, football, and basketball.  Some items that are found to be enjoyable to collect are bobble heads, posters, die-cast models, and new items like the Fat Heads products.  These are life-like, life-sized reproductions of sports heroes that can be stuck to your wall.  With all of the memorabilia that a fan can collect, sometimes it’s commonplace to see people becoming perplexed where to begin or how to start collecting sports memorabilia.  Collecting any sports memorabilia or sports collectibles is a very personalized pastime that has significance based more on the collector’s likes and passions as much as the accomplishments of the individual athlete or team.

For those of us who want to buy a family member or a friend a gift that is related to their favorite athlete, team, or sport, what do we look for?  For starters, you might want to consider the New York Yankees.  This baseball team is one of, if not the most famous baseball team in the world, plus their rosters from past to present has been dotted with all-time greats.  On the other hand, maybe they are into NASCAR.  Then you have Tony Stewart, Jimmy Johnson, and lots more.  We cannot ignore the unforgettable Dale Earnhardt Sr. whose memorabilia have not only doubled but tripled after his death, and seem to be growing in value even more each year.  As with many eminent painters like Rembrandt, Earnhardt fanatics consistently refuse to allow his dream and legacy to die.

NASCAR collectors do not only have a wide selection of cars to choose from, but now they can get Plush Bears designed after the driver, autobiographies, yearbooks, key chains, lighters, plates, and much more.  Even baseball memorabilia and sports collectibles have broadened into the Christmas niche, with a wide selection of decorations for the tree and even the roof of your home.

Furthermore, there are a lot of other sports greats as well, like Ben Roethlisberger, Shaquille O’Neil, and Nomar Garciaparra.  Moreover, let us not forget the legendary Michael Jordan.  Sports memorabilia collectors may or may not have realized how much throwback jerseys have influenced sports memorabilia, but in 1980, when the major sports leagues started to market both new and used game jerseys, the collectors wanted even more.

Die-cast collectibles have also evolved.  One of the hottest items at one time were fire trucks, but they went around back to the muscle cars and the newer hotrod collectibles.  Of course we always have the sports collectors who will grab anything from a sketch of Tiger Woods to a vintage Los Angeles Lakers team photograph.  Even the seven-time conqueror of the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong, has an extensive fan base for memorabilia and sports collectibles.

When it comes to the monetary value of the items you collect, remember that the more celebrated the star, the more expensive the sports memorabilia will be.  The value of the item will shoot up even more if the authenticity can be verified in some way.  Be careful and don’t lose any items related to your sports collectible or sports memorabilia.  These would include the original box, any correspondence or signatures, receipts, etc.  These will all help to make the item more valuable and collectible.
